Once...more with feeling.
So I think I must have been taking crazy pills yesterday when I made that list of top 5 musical movies that are non-musicals because I neglected to include one truly fantasmo movie of the movie-non-musical-but-still-musical persuasion. This movie is of course, the Oscar winning indie flick, Once.
I realized my infinitely embarrassing mistake today when I started listening to “Falling Slowly” – a.k.a. the award winner of a song – on my iPod. I forgot how truly haunting that song is and therefore was taken aback when the song came on shuffle. As soon as Glen started singing “I don’t know you, but I want you” I was completely lost. I had to stop everything I was doing -which was not much really, just writing in my journal/starting to read more Breaking Dawn – and listen to the whole movie soundtrack.
If you haven’t seen this movie, please go rent it now. Or at least pick up the soundtrack. It’s really something else. The Swell Season – Glen and Marketa’s band – is coming to Massey Hall September 20 and I would kill to go but I don’t know anyone who has heard of the movie let alone wants to go. Maybe I’ll just go by myself cause at this point, I don’t think I could bear to stay at home when such amazing music is being played live a 40 minute subway ride away.
Watch this movie. Pardon my pun – you should have known it was coming - but if you’re anything like me, you won’t be able to watch it only once. J
P.S. – In completely unrelated news, I just read that Miriam Toews, the author of one of the greatest books ever, A Complicated Kindness, is releasing her new book, The Flying Troutmans, on September 2! Can you say amazing?
I’ve loved all her books but this one sounds particularly interesting as it involves some sort of family road trip which in my book is always an excellent setting for any book or movie. Just look at my post dedicated to the best road trip movies ever from not too long ago. I have titch of an obsession with them. Speaking of which, I have to watch Transamerica again. I’ve been craving some Zegers in my life. It’s a Boy Girl Thing was pretty great but has nothing on a pretty much nude Kevin in a greaseball cowboy hat. So, so good.
P.P.S – I just read that Miriam Toews will be making an in-store appearance at the Indigo at Bay & Bloor on September 11! I’m so going. Do you think she’ll sign my copy of A Complicated Kindness? My fingers are crossed so tight you don’t even know.
P.P.S - *This is the last P.S. I swear!* I just read that Miriam Toews went to King’s College in N.S.! I almost went there. How weird – and slightly amazing – is that? Maybe I should have gone there and become a bestselling author like her. Oh, who am I kidding, then I’d miss out on TIFF and let’s be honest, I don’t think I’d live without it.
